It’s National Jelly Bean Day!

Brach's Orchard Fruit Jelly Beans

No kidding, someone – probably Jelly Belly – has named today, April 22nd, National Jelly Bean Day. Sadly, the bag we’re working on today (the third of our post-Easter half-price haul) doesn’t measure up to such an honor. It’s a bag of Brach’s Orchard Fruit, fourteen ounces of almost entirely sugar, that had an original price tag of $2.99 at our local Kroger.

Brach’s are the first brand of jelly beans I can ever remember eating, back when they were made in the USA – they’re a product of Mexico, now, made by the Ferrara Candy Company. That’s weird, because jelly beans (aka frijolitos) are awfully hard to find in Mexico! Whatever the case, these aren’t even a match for the Starburst Fave Reds and Jolly Rancher beans I’ve already reviewed…

Orchard Fruits come in six flavors: cherry, grape, lemon, orange, strawberry and apple. There are no licorice, and the green ones – unlike olden days – are apple instead of lime. At least there’s no watermelon!  Although they’re miniatures, like high-end and wannabe high-end beans, they don’t have the company name stamped on the shell in white sugar. All six flavors are hard candy shells formed around the same stiff, pinkish, translucent jelly with a neutral flavor. The flavors are fairly strong, especially the lemon, which hits you rather like a Lemonhead candy – probably because Ferrara makes them, too, and uses the same artificial flavors. All flavors seem have a slight chemical tang, though.

I like the assortment (and absence of licorice – so sue me), and the texture reminds me of the jelly beans of my youth – back when they were bigger (and the bags weighed a full pound). That faint chemical taste is a little off-putting, though, so these are just everyday beans for gobbling – not gourmet tastes. Sorry, Ferrara…
